Paint and Coatings Terminology

For a paint and coating technologists, it is very important to understand each paint and coating terminology correctly. Here are listed the important terminologies used in the paints and coatings subject.

  • Paint: A colorful material applied over various surfaces to impart some decorative and protective properties.
  • Coatings: Advanced category of paints normally applied in thinner layer over specialized applications mostly over metals and polymers etc. This includes chrome platings, galvanization process etc. along with organic coatings.
  • Coverage: Total surface area covered by the paint in per litre/gallon for example coverage in Ltr is measured as: m2/Ltr.
  • Weight per gallon/Ltr [WPL]: Weight of paint in grams/Kg or gallon in a litre volume. This provides density of the paint [Kg [mass]/ [volume]Ltr].
  • Volume solid: Solid of the paint by volume [and not by mass].
  • Non Volatile Mass [NVM]: It is the total volatile content inside paint measured in percentage.
  • Viscosity: It is a measure of resistance to flow. Normally in paints the flow cups [Ford cup B4/B6 etc.] viscosity are very commonly used and the measurement unit is in seconds.
  • Specific gravity: Specific gravity normally interchangeably used for density [due to references are taken with respect to water]. It is a measure of mass per unit volume. Higher the pigment and extender contain of the paint, higher is the density.
